Create a new script library routing item

Did you know it’s possible to use script items to control the skip patterns in your questionnaire, even when using the Build application? Just like response-based routing and Goto logic, script library items direct respondents or interviewers to only the appropriate questions. By inserting a script library routing item, you can decide the most effective way of routing respondents and interviewers through the survey.

This example describes how you can use a script library item to hide the “Previous” button that appears on pages in a questionnaire, as shown below in Figure 1.

Figure 1: The “Previous” and “Next” navigation buttons appear at the bottom of each page.

Begin by going to Build, inserting a new item, and clicking on the Routing Items tab:

Figure 2: Insert a routing item from the Script Library.

Select the option to “Insert from Script Library.” The script library menu presents a list of pre-built interview script items. Scroll down and select the item, “Hide the Previous button.” A description of each library item is included.

Figure 3: Select the script library Item you want to insert, “Hide the Previous button.”

Select “OK” to return to the Overview tab in Build. The IOM script item will appear in your questionnaire at the point you selected to insert it:

Finally, activate your questionnaire in test mode, and check to see that the “Previous” button is no longer displayed.

Many other items are also available from the Script Library. Just highlight a library item to view the description, along with instructions for how to use the script item. Additional information is available in the Dimensions Development Library at http://www.spss.com/ddl/.
