Creating a summary table with mrTables

mrTables makes it easy to create summaries of tabular data.

Figure 1 below shows how a typical rating scale question might be tabulated.

You may, however, want to combine the 5 and 4 scores to create a top box score.

Here's how it works (see Figure 2 below):

  • First, create a grid table by choosing a variable (in this case rating) and clicking Add Grid/Loop.
  • Next, select the column item variable (which is the rating scale) and click Edit on the table builder. This enables you to change the rating scale for all of the grid slices in one step.

  • Now make your edits. In this case, we combine Very Interested and Slightly Interested. Highlight both choices and choose Combine. See the result in Figure 3 below. Then change the text in the Label column to a meaningful name, such as Top Box Rating.

  • You can make additional modifications, such as creating a Bottom Box Rating or moving the responses up or down in the fields (see Figure 4 below).

  • Finally, populate your table and see your summary (Figure 5 below):
