Advanced variables with mrTables

Have you ever wanted to incorporate segmentation from statistical analyses into your data tabulations? Do you ever need to define segments of your respondents based on other survey questions? Do you use and re-use the segments on the top or side of your tables? Have you ever wanted to simply create a new question from two or more other questions?

With mrTables you can create variables containing the segment categories of your own design.

Here’s how it works:

First, go to the top of your mrTables screen, and create a new variable by clicking on Variables and New Advanced.

Next, enter your new variable name and description. In the new variable dialog box, select the Categorical type of variable. Click Insert to add a User Defined Category for each segment that you want to appear.

Click Edit Item by each new category; you can define the segments by creating expressions based on other variables in your survey.

Add appropriate labels to each category. These will show up on your tables. When you are finished, click OK and the variable will appear in mrTable’s variable pane.

Once you create your variable, use the variable on either the top or side of your tables, and run your tables.

If you run statistical tests, such as the column proportions or column means tests, the new variable can be used on the top of your table. This enables you to test all segments in the new variable against all other segments in that variable.

You gain more flexibility than if you had created the new variable or banner by using the “Create Variable from Side/Top” option. In that instance, statistical tests will only test segments within the original variables that comprise the new variable.

Advanced variables in mrTables allows you to incorporate segments of respondents derived from other statistical analyses into your tabulations—so you can continue your analysis.
