Integrating SPSS Functionality into Your Database Applications

As a database professional, have you ever wanted to incorporate statistics with your SQL Server database applications?

SPSS Statistical Services for SQL Server 2005 enables you to add analytics to your applications while working in a single environment. You’ll save time because the analytical software is integrated with SQL Server 2005. Everything is in one place, so you don’t have to go back and forth between products. It also provides you with functionality never before available in SQL Server 2005, enabling you to reveal information that can’t be found with traditional business intelligence (BI) analysis.

SPSS Statistical Services is available as an add-on product for the Business Intelligence Development Studio. In the following sections, learn how you can use SPSS analytics with this SQL Server 2005 database development tool suite.

Business Intelligence Development Studio

The Business Intelligence Development Studio enables you to create SQL Server applications, which are sometimes called "packages," through a graphical user interface. For example, you can use the Business Intelligence Development Studio to develop a package that extracts and transforms data, derives new variables, creates a formatted report, and notifies recipients when reports are ready.

You can use SPSS Statistical Services with two components in the Business Intelligence Development Studio:

Analysis Services provides the data mining component, while Integration Services provides extract, transform, and load (ETL) functionality.

Analysis Services

After setting a Data Source View in SQL Server, you will have the full data exploration and analytical functionality of SPSS available. With SPSS, you can comprehensively understand the structure of your data and extract the historical, real-time, and predictive information required to design better predictive models and OLAP cubes using Analysis Services. For example, you can bin columns with SPSS, and convert continuous data into groups for reporting, cubes, and data mining. You can further explore the data in SPSS, or save the query for later use.

SPSS Statistical Services includes default exploration and analysis templates to enable you to quickly incorporate this functionality within Analysis Services. You can create or modify these templates to suit the specifics of your projects.

Integration Services

SPSS Statistical Services incorporates SPSS functionality at the Data Flow level within Integration Services. By using SPSS Statistical Services with Integration Services, you can more easily integrate and analyze data from multiple heterogeneous information sources. SPSS Statistical Services includes integrated functionality in the following areas:

Developer productivity

Until now, the lack of integrated analysis tools for application development and debugging has inhibited the database developer’s ability to provide high-value analysis to decision makers. SPSS Statistical Services provides data access, preparation, and analysis functionality that can fundamentally change the value of the information that database developers can provide to decision makers.
