Clearly Report Your Results to the People Who Can Use Them
Once your analysis is complete, you usually need to summarize results so that decision makers and other readers can understand them. The goal of the reporting stage, therefore, is to create easy-to-understand results from your data analysis so decision makers can quickly understand and act upon your information. SPSS Base includes numerous features and capabilities for the reporting stage. These include:
A variety of charts and graphs, which provide you with the right visual to describe your results. Graph types include:
- Categorical charts: including several types of 3-bar, bar, line, area, pie, boxplot, and error
bar charts
- Quality control charts: including Pareto, X-Bar, and Sigma charts
- Scatterplots: including simple, grouped, scatterplot matrix, and 3-D charts
- Density charts: including population pyramids, dot charts, and histograms
- Diagnostic and exploratory plots: including caseplots and time-series plots
- Probability plots: including plots of observed and expected values
- Autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation function plots: including natural log transformations
and seasonal and nonseasonal differencing
- Cross-correlation function plots: including natural log transformations and seasonal and
nonseasonal differencing
- Multiple use charts: including dual-Y and overlay charts, 2-D line charts (both axes can be scale axes), and charts for multiple response sets
- Custom charts: through support for SPSS Inc.'s Graphics Production Language (GPL). This custom chart creation language enables advanced users to attain a broader range of chart and option possibilities than the interface supports.
This chart was created using the Graphics Production Language (GPL). Each histogram in this chart is sub-divided into groups and stacked accordingly. The gridlines are drawn in 3-D.
The Chart Builder enables you to create charts using a chart creation canvas that offers a limited preview.
The Chart Builder enables you to improve chart creation performance and gain more robust reporting capabilities for commonly used charts, including SPLOMS (scatterplot matrices), histograms, and population pyramids. You can easily create charts by
dragging variables and elements onto a chart creation canvas. Optionally, you can use a shortcut method based
on an existing chart in the Gallery. You will see a limited preview of the chart as it
is being built. At creation time, you can use multiple templates, which can be added in
any order, and select interpolation types for lines and areas. For easy access in the future,
save customized charts in your "Favorites."
The presentation graphics system enables you to produce more professional-looking graphs. It includes features that make it easy
to create the graph you want and produce readable graph output. You also have more control at both creation
and edit time, which can ease your workload in a production setting. Create a chart or graph once, and
then use your specifications to create hundreds more just like it.
The presentation graphics system in SPSS Base provides you with frequently requested features
you can use in your charts to more clearly present results. These features include:
- Long string support that ensures you can show longer variable and value labels in their entirety
- Smart text wrapping that ensures longer variable labels wrap at intelligent breaks
- Charts you can annotate. You can also control the position of annotations and the frames surrounding
annotations.
- Paneled charts. Create a table of sub charts, one panel per level or condition, showing multiple rows
and columns.
- Categories that you can automatically reorder in differing order (descending or ascending) or by
different sort methods (value, label, or summary statistic)
- Data value labels that you can drag to any position on your chart, add connecting lines, and match
font color to subgroup
- Y=X reference line
- Tree-view layout and finer control of template bundles
- Smart assignment of default tick values for scale axes (e.g., 10, 20, 30, instead of 12.2, 22.2, 32.2)
- Minimal text element collision/overlap
- Minimum and maximum scale axis values
- Lines in scatterplots
- 3-D effects for pie and bar charts
- Binning on scatterplots
- The ability to control the placement of chart objects, such as the legend, title, etc.
- Axis labels that you can display, align, and edit
Report OLAP cubes allow you to spot key findings and explore details through interactive output. Report cubes are interactive tables that enable you to slice, dice, and drill down into your data for data exploration. Report OLAP cubes in SPSS Base are easier to use than OLAP cubes found in other software because you can set up the OLAP cubes yourself-there's no need to involve your IT department. Report OLAP cubes work right from your SPSS data files to include value and variable labels. Also, SPSS can take millions of rows and aggregate them in an OLAP cube to make them meaningful in seconds.
Easy export to Microsoft® Excel®. You can export pivot tables, including the current view or all layers, to your current version of Excel. This enables you to put your SPSS tables (including those created in the SPSS Tables™ add-on module) on the same sheet in the same Excel workbook file.
Easy export to Microsoft Word. Export SPSS output into Word for final report creation. You can convert pivot tables to Word tables with all formatting saved, and all graphics are converted into static pictures.
Easy export to PDF. When you do this, you can choose to:
- Optimize the PDF for Web viewing
- Control whether or not PDF-generated bookmarks correspond to Navigator Outline entries in the Output Viewer
- Control whether or not fonts are embedded in the document. Embedded fonts ensure that the end user/reader of the document sees the text in its original font (otherwise, font substitution may occur). For example, if you use a non-Roman font such as Japanese, the reader will be able to view Japanese characters within the PDF.
Other reporting software of interest to SPSS Base users:
- Create custom tables using a highly intuitive interface and included statistics with the
SPSS Tables add-on module
