SPSS Inc. Announces New Version of Premier Statistical and Data Management Software

SPSSĀ® 13.0 Features Enhancements for Reporting, Identification of Groups, Data Management and Predictive Analytics for Survey Research

CHICAGO, 09/14/04

SPSS Inc. (NASDAQ: SPSS) today announced the availability of SPSS® 13.0 for Windows® and SPSS Server® 13.0 for Windows. The latest version of SPSS, developed based on direct customer feedback, includes significantly enhanced reporting capabilities, new add-on modules for group identification, more powerful data management features and predictive analytics for survey research.

"The new version of SPSS for Windows is a major upgrade," said Bob Muenchen, manager, Statistical Consulting Center, Office of Information Technology at The University of Tennessee. "SPSS 13.0 includes an array of features that people will use often in their daily work."

More than 250,000 organizations worldwide rely on SPSS for Windows for survey research, database analysis and scientific reporting. SPSS 13.0 for Windows provides a broad range of capabilities for each step in the analytical process, including planning, data access, data management and preparation, analysis, reporting and deployment.

Enhanced Reporting Capabilities

Building on the improvements to the presentation graphics system introduced in SPSS 12.0, the new version of SPSS for Windows offers enhanced reporting capabilities. New chart types and chart display features give users more options for presenting data. The SPSS Tables™ add-on module offers expanded category management capabilities, delivering extensive control to users for displaying data. Additionally, SPSS tables and charts can now be easily exported to Microsoft® PowerPoint®, saving users time and improving the accuracy of reporting data.

"SPSS 13.0’s data visualization capabilities are unparalleled," said Brian Robertson, PhD, director of research, Market Decisions. "The new chart types are great, and the paneled charts will provide our organization with more options in helping our market research customers visualize their data."

New Add-On Module Enables Users to Better Identify Groups

The new SPSS Classification Trees™ add-on module creates classification and decision trees, which work directly within the SPSS environment to help users identify groups, discover relationships between groups and predict future events. Intuitive, visual trees enable users to present results that more easily explain categorical results to non-technical audiences.

"I am very excited about the new SPSS Classification Trees module," said Daniel Robertson, PhD, research associate, College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University. "It will be useful in analyzing large population groupings and uncovering previously unknown relationships within those groups."

More Powerful Data Management

The new data management features in SPSS 13.0 help users save time, while increasing both the accuracy and reliability of their data. The availability of long text strings ensures that users will preserve data when working with open-ended question responses or when importing data from software that permits long data strings.

"SPSS 13.0's support of longer text strings is a huge addition to the software’s functionality," said Jay Goodwin, PhD, research psychologist, U.S. Army Research Institute. "It opens up myriad possibilities for both data cleaning and data management."

The new Data and Time Wizard makes it easier to import date and time data from a variety of sources, while also simplifying a number of common tasks associated with these variables. The enhanced Data Editor includes new splitter controls - a spreadsheet-like system for entering and displaying data - which allow users to quickly and easily analyze large datasets.

Predictive Analytics for Survey Research

By using SPSS Complex Samples™ to perform sophisticated analysis, users can more accurately analyze and predict numerical and categorical outcomes from complex samples. The latest version of this add-on module includes Complex Samples General Linear Models (CSGLM), enabling users to build linear regression, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) models for evaluating and predicting numerical outcomes. The module also features Complex Samples Logistic Regression (CSLOGISTIC), enabling users to analyze and calculate categorical outcomes.

"A large part of our analytical work involves studies with complex sampling designs," said Market Decision’s Robertson. "SPSS Complex Samples provides a framework for predicting outcomes while also taking sample design into account. SPSS Complex Samples is an exceptional module that enables me to accurately predict outcomes by analyzing survey data."
