Using commuter licenses with SPSS 14.0 for Windows®

This is a complimentary tip available only to SPSS Direct subscribers.

Question

With a network license, is there a way to run SPSS 14.0 for Windows without connecting to the network?

Answer

Yes. SPSS 14.0 for Windows offers commuter licenses that enable network license users to run SPSS without connecting to the network and the license manager.

You can designate a certain percentage of licenses as commuter licenses by editing the LSERVOPTS environment variable (created on the license server during installation of the Sentinel license manager).

The default commuter license percentage is 0%, but you can increase it up to 100%. The License Manager Administration program shows the commuter license usage.

In order to use a commuter license, the client machine must be a portable computer with SPSS 14.0 for Windows installed, and must be connected to the network when licenses are checked out. The user opens the SPSSCommute application, found in the SPSS program group, and specifies which components to use. Only components installed with a separate license code are listed individually.

The maximum default checkout duration is seven days, but the default can be increased to up to 180 days by editing the registry of the client machine.
