Reserving network licenses for specified users or workstations

This is a complimentary tip available only to SPSS Direct subscribers.

Question

We have purchased a network license for one of the following products: SPSS for Windows®, Clementine®, AMOS™, or SPSS Text Analysis for Surveys™. How do we reserve licenses for users rather than making them available on a first-come, first-served basis?

Answer

When configuring your network license environment, you can reserve network licenses for use by specified users or workstations through the Sentinel™ LM Server Administration that is installed as part of the Sentinel License. Access the Sentinel LM Server Administration utility via the Windows Start Menu. Select Start>Programs>SPSS Sentinel License Manager>Sentinel LM Server Administration.

When the Administration utility is launched, select Edit>Reservation File. The "WlsGrMgr" window will launch. From the menu, select File>New. A new license reservation file will be created called "lsreserv". Next, select Feature>Add to launch the “Add License Reservation Wizard", then click Next.

You will be prompted to enter the feature name, feature version, and capacity as shown in Figure 1 below. Click here for a full list of product feature information.

Please note that indicating the feature version is NOT optional. When entering the version of your product, enter only the major release number (xxx) and do not include the decimal. For example, you should enter "130" for SPSS 13.0 for Windows and SPSS 13.0.1 for Windows. When finished, click Next.

Once the feature is specified, you will need to define a group, as shown in Figure 2. Enter a group name of your choice and the number of tokens (licenses) you would like to reserve for this group, and then click Next.

You can now specify who is a part of this group by clicking Add. A member dialog box will appear and will prompt you for identifying information. Members of a group can be specified either by users or machines. Please enter a user name, as shown in Figure 3, or a non-domain qualified machine name. This will allow a license to be granted (included) or will restrict distribution of a license to the above member (excluded). When finished, click OK.

Click Finish when you have added all desired users. You can add additional groups by choosing the Group>Add menu sequence and navigating through the "Add New Group Wizard." You can save the reservation file, “lsreserv,” via File>Save or by clicking Save Toolbar. Please note that in order to implement this reservation, you will need to stop and restart the Sentinel LM service in Windows. This can be done through the control panel in Windows.
