| Operating system license | Based on the number of users. |
| Operating system software | Sun Solaris™ 2.5, 2.6, 7, 8, or 9 for Sun UltraSPARC® processors; SCO® OpenServer™ 5 for Intel® Pentium® processors; HP-UX 10.20 or 11i for PA-RISC processors; Red Hat® Linux® 7.2; and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 |
| Operating system documentation | Online or hardcopy |
| System administration documentation | Online or hardcopy |
| System administration training | Training will be needed if you do not have a knowledgeable UNIX® System Administrator. Your hardware vendor may have names of sites offering training. |
| C compiler user licenses | C compiler user licenses are needed to compile the sample management system (SMS). The GNU C compiler supplied on the Quancept CATI CD-ROM is recommended for all operating systems. For Sun UltraSPARC processors, you may use the Sun C compiler or the GNU C compiler. If you use SCO OpenServer 5, you should order the OpenServer Development System. Do not order the OpenServer Development Kit, as the compiler contained in the kit is a UnixWareŽ compiler and will not work with SPSS software. For HP 9000 servers, you can use the HP-UX C compiler. |
| CPU | Your CPU selection should be based on cost, number of interviewers the server needs to support, and potential for growth. If you're using the SCO OpenServer or Linux, you will need a Pentium-class processor running at 200MHz or faster. If you are using Sun Solaris, you will need a Sun Ultra Series processor or faster. If you're running an HP-UX operating system, then you will need an HP 9000 server or faster. |
| Memory | 20MB minimum for 50 interviewers. See the section below for memory recommendations to support various configurations. |
| Disk space | 2GB minimum. You should have separate partitions for the operating system and users/production. |
| Console monitor | Monochrome or color |
| Tape backup device | RAID disk drives to back up your data |
| Network adapter | Optional |
| UPS | Optional, but strongly recommended. |
| Modem | The modem should be connected to a phone line so that it is accessible by SPSS support for dial-up assistance. |
| Number of Interviewers | Amount of Memory Required |
|---|---|
| 20 interviewers | 20MB |
| 50 interviewers | 50MB |
| 100 interviewers | 100MB |
| 150 interviewers | 150MB |
| 200 interviewers | 200MB |
| Per additional interviewer | 1MB |
| Number of SMS Servers: | Amount of Memory Required |
|---|---|
| 5 servers | 20MB |
| 10 servers | 40MB |
| 15 servers | 60MB |
| 20 servers | 80MB |
| 25 servers | 100MB |
| 30 servers | 120MB |
| Per additional server | 4MB |
Your operating system will require 16MB of RAM.
| Terminal servers | Terminal servers can either be multi-port internal cards or separate terminal server boxes "etherlinked" to the UNIX machine. SPSS generally suggests the latter because of flexibility it provides. |
| Terminals | These can be either dumb terminals (for example a Wyse 60 terminal) or PCs with Telnet software. |
| System set up | Your hardware vendor should set up the system. |
| Cabling | Your hardware vendor should be able to provide appropriate information. |
| System support / maintenance | SPSS recommends that you have a local maintenance agreement. |
| Interviewer headsets | These are optional, but are generally preferred by interviewers using mrDialer. |
Requirements are as above plus mrDialer 2.1.
